Belgrade - Reuters. The decision of the President of the Government of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, to resign was prompted by protests against corruption, which have been ongoing in the country. Notably, these protests began after the roof of the ironworks station in Novi Sad collapsed, the second largest city in Serbia, in November, resulting in the deaths of 15 people. Many participants in the protests, including students, teachers, and thousands of workers, accused the authorities of corruption. Aleksandar Vučić announced at a press conference dedicated to his resignation: "I took this step to relieve tension." Vučić himself reported his resignation on Tuesday, becoming the highest-ranking official to resign since the start of the protests. Moreover, he noted that the mayor of Novi Sad also submitted his resignation.
