Scandal in the Serbian Parliament

A session of the Serbian Parliament turned into a scandal when opposition deputies interrupted the debate by launching flares and smoke grenades, according to international media reports. The incident caused security forces to intervene to prevent a broader physical confrontation among lawmakers, some of whom became involved in a fight.

Opposition deputies expressed strong opposition to a motion presented by the ruling party, rejecting the approval of laws proposed by a government whose prime minister had resigned. During the altercation, a legislator was soaked with water thrown from a glass as tensions escalated. The situation became even more confusing and dramatic when it was reported that deputy Jasmina Obradović had suffered a stroke as a result of the incident, thus putting her life in danger.

Another deputy, who was pregnant, was injured, leading to accusations against the rioters for putting both her life and that of the unborn baby at risk. Ruling party legislators denounced that opposition members had even thrown a fragmentation grenade during the chaos in the chamber.
